Quick answer

TenPayGo is a payment app from Tencent, aimed at overseas users, for paying merchants inside mainland China. You can fund it three ways: Apple Pay, an overseas e-wallet, or an international bank card in your own name. It is deliberately narrower than Alipay or WeChat Pay — the official user agreement excludes transfers, receiving money, top-ups and red packets, so it is a spending tool rather than a wallet. On fees, the agreement states that a service fee applies when you pay with a bound international card and that the overseas-wallet route is excluded from that charge, with the current rate published through official notices and in the app — check the amount on screen before you confirm, because we do not publish a rate that Tencent has not. Support runs through the official channel: tenpaygo_support@tencent.com and +86 571 95017, daily 09:00–21:30 (UTC+8).

What TenPayGo actually is

TenPayGo is operated by Tenpay Payment Technology Co., Ltd. — the Tencent company behind WeChat Pay — and it is built specifically for overseas users, so the sign-up and verification flow is designed around a passport and a card or wallet issued outside mainland China rather than around a Chinese bank account. The official agreement describes the service as transferring funds between payers and payees through the TenPayGo app for consumption payments to merchants within mainland China.

That definition is worth reading twice, because it sets the shape of the product. It is a payment tool for spending in China, not a general-purpose money account.

Three ways to pay

The official site lists three funding routes, and they matter because they fail in different situations — which is exactly what you want in a back-up app.

Funding routeWhat it means in practiceWhen it saves you
Apple PayNo card details are entered into the app itself — you pay through Apple PayWhen you do not want to type card details into another app, or your card app already works with Apple Pay
Overseas e-walletA wallet issued outside mainland China, per the official agreementWhen you already hold a wallet the app supports, and you want to avoid card-based service fees
International bank cardA card issued outside mainland China, in your own nameWhen you want the simplest route: add the card and pay

What it deliberately does not do

The agreement is unusually clear that TenPayGo does not include opening a payment account, topping up an account, transferring funds, receiving transfers, or sending and receiving red packets. If you are used to Alipay or WeChat Pay as full wallets, this will feel limited — and that is the point: it removes a category of risk and a category of setup at the same time.

Practically, it means you should not expect to send money to a friend, receive a refund from a person, or hold a balance. Refunds on purchases do go back the way they came, to the original card or wallet.

What it costs

The official user agreement states that a service fee is charged when you use the service, and explicitly limits that to payments made with an international card you have bound, excluding the overseas-wallet route. The agreement also says the applicable rates are set out in the company's official notices and announcements, and that they appear in the app.

We are deliberately not printing a percentage here, because Tencent has not published one on the pages we can verify, and a made-up number is worse than no number. Check the fee shown on the confirmation screen in the app before your first payment — and if you are choosing between apps for a large bill, compare that number with the 200 RMB rule that applies on Alipay and WeChat Pay, which is 3% of the whole amount above 200 RMB.

Where you can use it

Tencent lists the everyday places that matter to a visitor: taxis, the metro, restaurants, shops, supermarkets, hotels, coffee shops, bars, attractions and healthcare. In other words, it is aimed at precisely the situations where a visitor is most likely to be stuck at a counter with a card that will not work.

Three features that are not about paying

The app also bundles three practical tools for the same audience: a 'circle to explain' function that gives you information about something you are looking at, real-time conversation translation, and a menu scanner that translates a menu and shows it to staff so you can order. None of them are reasons to install an app on their own; together with a working payment route, they are the difference between a usable app and a single-purpose one.

Should this replace Alipay or WeChat Pay?

No — treat it as an addition, not a replacement. Alipay and WeChat Pay are accepted in far more places, and the official 2024 measures apply to them as well: limits of USD 5,000 per transaction and USD 50,000 per year, easier card binding and simplified identity verification. If your card will not bind on one platform, or one platform restricts the account, a second app with a different funding route is the cheapest insurance you can carry.

Our recommendation for a first trip: set up Alipay as your primary app before you fly, add a second card from a different bank, and keep TenPayGo or WeChat Pay as the back-up. Then carry a few hundred yuan in cash, so that a payment failure costs you five minutes rather than an evening.

Common questions

What is TenPayGo?

A payment app from Tencent (Tenpay Payment Technology Co., Ltd.) for overseas users, used to pay merchants inside mainland China with Apple Pay, an overseas e-wallet, or an international bank card in your own name.

Can I send money to a friend with TenPayGo?

No. The official user agreement excludes transfers, receiving money, top-ups and red packets. It is for consumption payments to merchants.

Does TenPayGo charge a fee?

The agreement states that a service fee applies when paying with a bound international card, and that the overseas-wallet route is excluded from that fee. The rate is published in official notices and in the app — check it on the confirmation screen.

Do I need a Chinese bank account or phone number for TenPayGo?

The service is built around international cards and overseas wallets rather than a mainland bank account. The specific supported cards and wallets are subject to the app's page prompts and the official agreement.

How do I contact TenPayGo support?

tenpaygo_support@tencent.com or +86 571 95017, daily 09:00–21:30 (UTC+8) — both listed on the official site.

Should I use TenPayGo instead of Alipay?

Use Alipay or WeChat Pay as your main app, since they are accepted in more places, and keep TenPayGo as a back-up funding route. Two independent payment paths is the practical lesson from every traveller who has been stuck at a till.
