Quick answer
洗手间在哪里 (xǐ shǒu jiān zài nǎ lǐ) means "where is the bathroom?". 洗手间 is the polite word for washroom and 在哪里 means where is it. Say it slowly and clearly; the answer usually comes with a hand pointing.
Ten seconds, normal speed. Watch it twice and say it out loud the second time.
Word by word
洗手间 (xǐ shǒu jiān) - washroom. Literally "hand-washing room". This is the polite default, and the word printed on signs in malls, airports and hotels.
在哪里 (zài nǎ lǐ) - where is it. 在 is "at / in" and 哪里 is "where". The same two characters work for anything you are looking for: 地铁站在哪里, 车站在哪里.
So the sentence is not really "how do I say bathroom" - it is a pattern. Learn 在哪里 and you can point at anything and ask.
How to say it without being misunderstood
xǐ - the "x" is close to a soft "sh" said with a smile, not a hard "ks".
nǎ (third tone) dips down and comes back up. Said flat, it turns into 哪 (which) and the sentence sounds unfinished. lǐ (third tone) is the same dip at the end.
Speed matters more than perfection. Say it slowly and clearly, and people will answer the question you meant to ask.
The three words for "toilet" - and when to use which
Signs in China use more than one word, and the one you pick changes how the sentence lands.
| Chinese | Pinyin | Where you will see it |
|---|---|---|
| 洗手间 | xǐ shǒu jiān | Hotels, malls, airports, offices. The safe default anywhere. |
| 卫生间 | wèi shēng jiān | Restaurants, train stations, public buildings. Slightly more formal. |
| 厕所 | cè suǒ | Everyday speech between friends, small shops, older signs. Plain, not rude. |
What you will hear back
那边 / 这边 (nà biān / zhè biān) - over there / this way. 前面 (qián miàn) - up ahead. 左 / 右 (zuǒ / yòu) - left / right. 二楼 (èr lóu) - second floor. 一直走 (yì zhí zǒu) - keep going straight.
You do not need to reply at all. A nod and 谢谢 is the whole exchange.
If they answer too fast
请说慢一点 (qǐng shuō màn yī diǎn) - please speak more slowly. 可以指给我吗 (kě yǐ zhǐ gěi wǒ ma) - could you point for me?
People will almost always choose pointing. That is faster for both of you.
Common questions
How do you say where is the bathroom in Chinese?
洗手间在哪里 (xǐ shǒu jiān zài nǎ lǐ). 洗手间 means washroom and 在哪里 means where is it. You can also say 卫生间在哪里 or, in a pinch, 厕所在哪里.
Is it rude to say 厕所 in China?
Not rude, but it is the plainest of the three words. 厕所 is what you say to a friend or in a small noodle shop; 洗手间 or 卫生间 is what you use in a hotel, a mall or at a front desk.
What if they answer and I do not understand?
Say 请说慢一点 (please speak more slowly) or 可以指给我吗 (could you point). Most people will simply point, which is faster than repeating the sentence.
