Here's the secret most textbooks won't tell you: Chinese grammar is actually simpler than English grammar.
| Feature | English | Chinese |
|---|---|---|
| Verb conjugation | I go, he goes, I went, I have gone... | 去 (qù) — always the same! |
| Plurals | book → books, child → children | Add 们 (men) for people, otherwise context |
| Articles | a, an, the | None. Just context. |
| Gendered nouns | actor/actress, waiter/waitress | None. One word for all. |
| Tenses | Past, present, future with verb changes | Time words + context. No verb changes. |
English: Subject → Verb → Object (I eat rice.)
Chinese: Topic → Comment (The rice, I eat.)
米饭,我吃了。
Mǐfàn, wǒ chī le.
(Rice, I ate it.)
Literally: "Rice, I eat [completed]."
This is the MOST important pattern in Chinese. The topic comes first, then you comment on it.
More examples:
| English (SVO) | Chinese (Topic-Comment) | Literal Translation |
|---|---|---|
| I finished my homework. | 作业我做完了。 | Homework, I finished. |
| I don't like this movie. | 这个电影我不喜欢。 | This movie, I don't like. |
| Chinese is hard to speak. | 中文说起来很难。 | Chinese, speaking it is hard. |
In Chinese, time expressions come before the verb — never at the end like in English.
❌ 我吃饭昨天。 (Wǒ chīfàn zuótiān.)
✅ 我昨天吃饭。 (Wǒ zuótiān chīfàn.)
❌ 我去了北京去年。(Wǒ qù le Běijīng qùnián.)
✅ 我去年去了北京。(Wǒ qùnián qù le Běijīng.)
The Complete Order:
Subject + Time + Place + Verb + Object
我 昨天 在北京 吃 烤鸭
Subject + Time + Manner + Place + Verb + Object
我 今天 开心地 在家 看 书
*了* does NOT mark "past tense." It marks change of state or completed action.
Usage 1: Verb-了 = Completed Action
我吃了饭。 Wǒ chī le fàn.
I ate. / I have eaten. (Action completed.)
Usage 2: Sentence-了 = Change of State
下雨了。 Xià yǔ le.
It's raining now. (It wasn't before — change of state!)
我饿了。 Wǒ è le.
I'm hungry now. (Change of state!)
他会说中文了。 Tā huì shuō Zhōngwén le.
He can speak Chinese now. (He couldn't before — change!)
❌ 我去年在了北京。 (Don't use 了 with static past states!)
✅ 我去年在北京。
❌ 我是了学生。 (Never use 了 after 是!)
✅ 我是学生。
❌ 我每天吃了早饭。 (Don't use 了 for habitual actions!)
✅ 我每天吃早饭。
*把* moves the object BEFORE the verb, emphasizing what happened to it.
Normal: 我 吃 了 苹果。
Wǒ chī le píngguǒ.
I ate the apple.
With 把: 我 把 苹果 吃 了。
Wǒ bǎ píngguǒ chī le.
I [marker] apple ate [completed].
"I took the apple and ate it."
When to use 把:
请把门打开。 Qǐng bǎ mén dǎkāi. Please open the door.
我把作业做完了。 Wǒ bǎ zuòyè zuò wán le. I finished the homework.
他把我的笔拿走了。 Tā bǎ wǒ de bǐ ná zǒu le. He took my pen away.
*的* is used between a modifier and what it modifies.
| Pattern | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| Noun + 的 + Noun | 我的书 | My book |
| Adjective + 的 + Noun | 漂亮的花 | Beautiful flower |
| Phrase + 的 + Noun | 我昨天买的书 | The book I bought yesterday |
When to DROP 的:
With close relationships, single-syllable adjectives, and fixed compounds:
我妈妈 (NOT 我的妈妈) — close relationship
好朋友 (NOT 好的朋友) — fixed compound
Use 是...的 to highlight when, where, how, or who of a past event.
我是昨天到北京的。 Wǒ shì zuótiān dào Běijīng de.
(It was yesterday that I arrived in Beijing.)
他是坐飞机来的。 Tā shì zuò fēijī lái de.
(He came by plane.)
你们是在哪儿认识的? Nǐmen shì zài nǎr rènshi de?
(Where did you two meet?)
Chinese verbs often carry a second character that tells you the result.
| Verb | Complement | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 看 | 见 | 看见 to see (look + perceive) |
| 听 | 懂 | 听懂 to understand by listening |
| 做 | 完 | 做完 to finish doing |
| 找 | 到 | 找到 to find (search + arrive at) |
| 学 | 会 | 学会 to learn (study + master) |
我看见了。 Wǒ kànjiàn le. I see it. / I saw it.
我听不懂。 Wǒ tīngbudǒng. I don't understand (by listening).
作业做完了吗? Zuòyè zuòwán le ma? Finished your homework?
我找到了! Wǒ zhǎodào le! I found it!
